Govt ropes in Shilpa Shetty as Swachh Bharat brand ambassador

  • The government has roped in actress Shilpa Shetty as a brand ambassador for the Modi governments cleanliness initiative Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • The 41-year-old actress will feature in TV and radio campaigns aimed at discouraging people from littering on roads.
  • Soon, campaign posters featuring her will be displayed at various places across the country.
  • Littering is a major problem in urban areas wherein people, specially vendors or shopkeepers, do not use bins to throw the waste, he said.
  • The Ministry has also approached other celebrities like Priyanka Chopra to support the mission, which aims cleanliness and eradication of open defecation by 2019.
  • Shetty is the latest entrant in the list of the missions ambassadors like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Sachin Tendulkar

Kumar Sangakkara becomes second Asian to feature in 1000 matches

  • Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara is undoubtedly one of the finest left handed batsmen to have ever played the game. Despite having retired from the international cricket over a year ago, the elegant batsman continues to play his trade in different T20 leagues around the world. Currently, he is leading the Karachi Kings in the ongoing second edition of the Pakistan Super League. On 23 February, when he stepped on the field for the Kings against the Quetta Gladiators, he entered the record books.
  • He became only the 16th player and the second Asian batsman to play 1000 professional matches. He joined the elite list that has his former Sri Lanka team mate Mahela Jayawardene in the list. Mahela Jayawardene was the firstt Asian to accomplish the rare feat. His career has spanned for close to a decade and a half and that serves as the time frame during which the southpaw played the game of cricket.

New Zipline Connects Spain and Portugal

  • Limite Zero, a new zipline that connects Sanlucar de Guadiana, in Andalucia, Spain, to Alcoutim, in Algarve, Portugal—which is one hour behind. A privately funded passion project of Englishman David Jarman, the 2,362-foot-long zipline (called “la tirolina” in Spain) crosses the Guadiana River at 50 feet above sea level.
  • A 4x4 takes you to the departing platform, set near Spain’s San Marco Castle, and in less than a minute, you arrive on the Portuguese side, no passport required. (Speeds can reach up to 45 miles per hour.) A short walk takes you to Alcoutim village, where a small passenger ferry awaits anyone who needs a ride back to Spain; fare is included in the 15 euro price.

Gujarat Assembly Passes Bill To Impose Complete Ban On Hookah Bars

  • The Gujarat Assembly on Thursday passed an amendment bill which proposes a total ban on hookah bars and imposes maximum jail term of three years on those operating such joints despite absolute restriction.
  • The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution)(Gujarat Amendment), Bill, 2017 was passed through majority voice vote by ruling BJP members in the absence of Congress MLAs.

  • The Bill, which proposes some amendments to the present COTP Act, has replaced an Ordinance passed by Gujarat Government in December last year in this regard, after which, all the hookah bars in the state have been asked to shut their shops with immediate effect.
  • In his speech explaining the need to bring such amendment Bill, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja told the House that the current Act does not cover hookah bars in it.
  • As per the Bill, running a hookah bar in Gujarat will be considered as an offence punishable under this Act, the minister added.
  • Running a hookah bar will be considered as a cognizable offence which would attract a maximum fine of Rs 50,000 and a jail term up to three years, he said.

Somali president names Hassan Ali Khaire prime minister

  • Somalia's new President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has chosen political newcomer Hassan Ali Khaire, a former oil company executive, as the country's prime minister.
  • Mohamed took office peacefully this month after legislators selected him from 21 possible candidates. A dual US-Somali citizen with a reputation as a technocrat, he has promised to tackle hunger, corruption and violence in Somalia, which has been mired in civil war for a quarter of a century.
  • Khaire is a dual Norwegian citizen who once worked as a primary school teacher in Norway and also for the Norwegian Refugee Council before joining British energy explorer Soma Oil and Gas.

Rajasthan 2nd largest crude oil producer in country: Governor

  • Rajasthan has become the second largest crude oil producer in the country after the offshore field Bombay High, Governor Kalyan Singh said in the Assembly today, highlighting the achievements of the state government.
  • The state government has been working for the last few years for increasing happiness index in the state. Positive efforts have been made by the government to link every section of the society with mainstream by providing them the benefits of welfare schemes and through responsible, transparent and sensitive functioning,”

  • Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik will inaugurate the World Integrated Medicine Forum on Regulation of Homeopathic Medicinal Products: National and Global strategies in New Delhi . This is the first-of-its-kind forum considering the increased perception of the international world towards India as a key player in the progress of the homoeopathy drug industry,. Drug lawmakers, regulators, manufacturers and pharmacopeial experts from various regulatory authohorities, eminent scientific organisations and pharmaceutical industries from 25 countries, are participating in the two days forum to strategize the actionable aspects in the homoeopathic drug industry, which, in turn, will promote global harmonisation in the sector.
