THE Released Rankings of Asia Universities for 2018

Key points:

  • Some of the Key points related to rankings are: 
  • The National University of Singapore ranked top among Asian universities. From 2016 onwards, National University of Singapore ranked first in THE rankings. 
  • IISc (Indian Institute of science) was India's top ranking institute in the prestigious THE list. 
  • 42 Indian universities managed to secure a place in the renowned THE list this year. 
  • Only two Indian institutes’ finds the place in the top 50 Asian nations. 
  • On positive side, Indian universities representation in the annual universities ranking for Asia has improved to 42 from last year's 33 
  • On Negative side, several Indian institutions registered a decline in their rankings 

Times Higher Education rankings:

  • The Times Higher Education World University Rankings was started in the year 2004 to provide the definitive list of the world's best universities. In giving rankings it evaluated across various parameters like teaching, research, international outlook, reputation and more. 

India & THE rankings:

The Indian institutes that find the place in THE rankings are:
  1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) 
  2. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay 
  3. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur 
  4. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee 
  5. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and 
  6. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. 
  7. Tezpur University was ranked 100th in the prestigious THE list but the rank was shared with University of Haifa (Israel) and Sejong University (South Korea). 
  • In this year rankings Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay dropped to 29th and 44th places. 
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras experiences the biggest drop and from 41 to 103 in 2018 rankings. 
  • Two of the country's newcomers to make the top 200 in the list include the Indian School of Mines ranked 141 and Banaras Hindu University which is jointly ranked 194. 
This year India improved its performance in research productivity, even but it tends to lag behind on research environment.
The only area of decline for India was teaching reputation.
