Politics

  • Rajasthan became first State to ratify National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2014, the bill seeks to end the collegium system of appointments and transfer of judges to higher judiciary.
  • The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee visited the historic ‘Cu Chi’ Tunnel in Vietnam during his three days official visit. ‘Cu Chi’ tunnel is one of the most bombed, shelled and devastated areas of world military history.
  • US House of Representatives approved Barack Obama’s plan to train the Syrian opposition taking on Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). US House of Representatives is one of the two houses of the bicameral legislature, the other one is Senate.
  • Electronic Toll Collection programme decided to roll out by Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under the brand name FASTag.
  • Goa became permanent venue for the International Film Festival of India after signed MoU between Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Government of Goa.
  • Total 16 Agreements signed between India and China during the official visit of President of China Xi Jinping.

Deaths

  • On 17th September 2014, Sanker Baruah, the former Director General of Police of Assam Police died. He committed suicide after raided his residence by CBI related with Saradha Chit Fund Case.

Appointments

  • Lalitha Kumaramangalam became Chairperson of National Commission for Women, the commission established in the year 1992 to represent the rights of women and to provide voice for their issues.
  • Adil Zainulbhai became Chairman of Quality Council of India, the Council established in the year 1997.

Sports

  • International Basketball Federation allowed the players to wear religious caps on a trial basis. Two Sikh players namely Amanjot Singh and Amritpal Singh were asked to remove their Turbans before starting the game recently in July 2014.
  • Sardar Singh, the Captain of Men’s Hockey Team will be the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent at 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Incheon is the third South Korean city to host the Asian Games.

Science and Technology

  • World’s first water based nuclear battery developed by Jae W. Kwon. The battery can used as a source of reliable energy in automobiles and space flight.
