J&K weddings: Govt limits number of guests and food served 

  • The Jammu and Kashmir government has banned the big fat weddings to curb the wastage of food in these social events. 
  • The restructuring, announced by the state government is aimed at the number of guests invited for weddings, engagement parties to avoid wastage of food during these functions.
  • Now you can only invite 500 guests for a daughter’s wedding and 400 for a son’s wedding. For the ring ceremonies people can invite 100 guests
  • If the implementing agencies found anyone violating the government orders they will have to face the law.
  • Kashmiri weddings are prolonged and lavish celebrations where tonnes of meat and rice is consumed which allegedly causes sharp rises in local food prices during the fall. 
  • The state government has asked the deputy commissioners of the state to implement the decision and ensure its full implication. 
  • The government has also restricted number of dishes served during the wedding: seven non-veg and seven vegetarian dishes can be made available in marriages besides two items of sweets or ice cream.

PM releases the book “Judicial Reforms – Recent Global Trends”

  • The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, released the book “Judicial Reforms – Recent Global Trends” and presented the first copy to President Pranab Mukherjee.
  • The book, written by Dalveer Bhandari, a judge at the International Court of Justice, talks about the need of judicial reforms.
  • "The simple point which I am trying to drive at is that it is high time for all of us to collectively not only think but also to act how to address these issues. Without Bench, without adequate infrastructure, we cannot have any sort of reforms worthwhile," Mukherjee said.

AAI, IATA launch e-billing solution for airport operators 

  • The state-owned AAI, along with International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched its e-billing solution for airport operators and air navigation services providers across the world. 
  • Developed in-house, the electronic billing solution for data, e-invoicing and collection of tariff from the airlines is being used by the AAI for several years now. 
  • The e-billing solution, "SKYREV360" will help airport operators and air navigation services providers worldwide to overcome the issues of revenue leakages, besides reducing redundancies 
  • The launch of the e-billing solution for global clients is aimed at shoring up Airports Authority of India's revenue 

Bharat Financial launches instant micro loan facility

  • Microfinance institution Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd today launched an initiative for instant loan approval and disbursed them to three women in a village near Bassi in Jaipur district. 
  • The initiative is expected to help rural areas embrace cashless transactions. 
  • The loans are cashless since they are deposited directly to the loanee's bank account. 
  • Three women were approved instant loans through the technology in Dev village near Bassi
  • It will now be rolled out by June 2017 across the country in the microfinance company's nationwide network with several being in Rajasthan, Bihar and Delhi. 
  • Rao also said that it will boost operational efficiencies, enhance customer satisfaction and reduce the risk of fake customers. 
  • The company provides non collateral loans up to Rs 60,000 for one year to women in rural areas. 

India to host Combined World Cup for shooting in 2019

  • India will be hosting the Combined World Cup for shooting in 2019, a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will further boost the country's profile as a global shooting destination.
  • The National Rifle Association of India's (NRAI) bid was approved by the International Shooting Sport Federation's Executive Board in its meeting held in New Delhi.
  • Combined World Cup comprises all the three categories — shotgun, rifle and pistol, and at stake in the 2019 edition will be a number of quota places for the Tokyo Games.
  • The tournament will be one of the last few events heading into the quadrennial extravaganza in the Japanese capital.
  • In the upcoming tournament, a total of 50 countries will be represented by 452 athletes and among them will be reigning and former Olympic champions, world champions and continental champions lining up against India's top guns.

Ms. Suman Saxena takes charge as the Whole Time Member of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI)

  • Ms. Suman Saxena took charge as the Whole Time Member, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI). 
  • She will look after Research and Regulation Wing comprising Corporate Insolvency, Corporate Liquidation, Individual Insolvency, Individual Bankruptcy, Research and Publications, Data Management and Dissemination and Advocacy. 
  • She will also look after National Insolvency Programme, Continuing Professional Programme, and Knowledge Management and Partnership. 
  • She served as a member of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service for over 35 years. Her last assignment was Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General, where she oversaw three important sectors, namely, defence, communications and railways. 
  • She has also been the Director of National Academy of Audit and Accounts. 

Airtel buys Telenor India 

  • Bharti Airtel Ltd agreed to acquire the assets of Telenor ASA’s India business, as the country’s biggest telecom operator seeks to preserve its position in a market where new entrant Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd’s aggressive pricing has spurred a wave of consolidation.
  • As part of the deal, Airtel will assume the Telenor unit’s liabilities related to licence fees and lease obligations for phone towers
  • The transaction, which won’t involve any cash payments to Telenor, will give Airtel access to 44 million customers (increasing its user base to 307 million), 43.4 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum in the 1,800MHz band and 20,000 base stations.

Azerbaijan strongman Ilham Aliyev names wife as vice-president

  • Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev has named his wife as his deputy, tightening the family’s grip on power in the small former Soviet oil-producing state.
  • Mehriban Aliyeva will become Azerbaijan’s first vice-president
  • He binstalled the first lady as the country’s second most powerful person and consolidated her position as a frontrunner to succeed her husband.
  • Energy-rich Azerbaijan has been controlled by the Aliyev family for most of the past five decades. Mr Aliyev’s father Heydar was head of the country’s governing Communist party before becoming president of the post-Soviet republic in 1993. His son took over as leader in 2003.

Justice Sapre to head Cauvery Tribunal

  • Supreme Court sitting judge Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre will head the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, a post that had been lying vacant for nearly one year. 
  • Supreme Court Chief Justice J S Khehar has nominated Justice Sapre as the tribunal chairman. The post was vacant after the resignation of Justice B S Chauhan following his appointment as Law Commission chairman, in March 2016. 
  • Before his elevation to the Supreme Court, Sapre served as chief justice of Gauhati High Court and the High Court of Manipur. 
  • He also served as judge at Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan High Courts. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court and assumed charge on August 13, 2014. He is due to retire on August 27, 2019.
  • The appointment of Sapre assumes significance since the Supreme Court is set to hear the Cauvery case on a regular basis from March 21.

  • Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh's biography, 'The People's Maharaja', was released
  • The authorised biography of the erstwhile scion of Patiala royalty, authored by Chandigarh-based writer Khushwant Singh, sheds a new light on the sequence of events that led to the 1984 army action at Golden temple in Amritsar.
