Sentence Improvement Quiz - Part 3

A part of sentence is in Red colour. You need to find the correct alternative from the provided options which makes the sentence grammatically and logically correct. Mark your answer accordingly

Question 1:

Tibet were occupied and ruling by China since 1951 in a calculated and systematic strategy aimed at the destruction of their national and cultural identities.

I-
had been occupied and ruled by China since 1951
II- have been occupied and ruling by China since 1951
III- has occupied and ruled by China since 1951
IV- has been occupied and ruled by China since 1951
V- No correction

Solution:

IV Sentence is in passive voice and Tibet is singular so II III and V choice will be eliminated easily. Past perfect is used when the event was started at a time in past and ended after some time only in the past. But present perfect tense is used when the event was started in past but ended in the recent past or still continued in the present. In the sentence since 1951 the event is going on so present perfect will be used. Hence option IV is the correct choice.

Question 2:

“It would be famously said that a language is a dialect” with an army. If not an army, the Hindi language is armed with two strengths: the constitutional mandate to promote it as India’s lingua franca, and the fact that it is far more widely spoken and understood than any other language in the country.
I- It was famously said that a language was a dialect
II- It is famously said that a language is a dialect
III- It has been famously said that a language was a dialect
IV- It must be famously said that a language is a dialect
V- No correction required

Solution:

II the given sentence is in Simple present form so only II option is the best choice.

Question 3:

However, a case is gaining momentum in favour of revisiting Part XVII of the Constitution which envisages, in essence, the replacement of English language with Hindi at the national level and “with other languages at the Eight Schedule on their respective states.”
I-
and with other languages in the Eight Schedule on their respective states.
II- and with other languages in the Eight Schedule in their respective states.
III- and with other languages in the Eight Schedule at their respective states.
IV- and with other languages at the Eight Schedule in their respective states.
V- No correction required

Solution:

II in is used to specify the part within the boundary or within the particular states. So in both parts either with Eight Schedules or with their respective states the preposition In is the correct choice which is only available in option II

Question 4:

Political parties seek to represent the people and to take decisions on their behalf”. But in India they have so far resisted attempts to be listed as “public authorities” under the Right to Information Act and thus be made liable to publicly disclose financial assets.
I- Political parties seeks to represent the people and takes decisions on their behalf
II- Political parties seek to represent the people and taking decisions on their behalf
III- Political parties seeks to represent the people and to take decisions on their behalf
IV- Political parties seek to represent the people and took decisions on their behalf
V- No correction required

Solution:

V the given sentence formation is correct. The word Political parties is plural so seek will be used and to maintain the sentence parallelism to take will be the right choice.

Question 5:

From India’s point of view, the agreement is a simple bilateral deal, but it must be looked within the context of its concerted ongoing efforts to deal” with black money.
I- but it must be looked at in the context of its concerted ongoing efforts to deal.
II- but it must look on in the context of its concerted ongoing efforts to deal
III- but it must be looked on in the context of its concerted ongoing efforts to deal
IV- but it can be looked inside the context of its concerted ongoing efforts to deal
V- No correction required

Solution:

I in the sentence when the object is more important than the subject passive voice is used. As in the above part it must be looked is correct as the subject looked but by whom, doesn’t really matters. A preposition at is used to specify particularly something. So at in the context is the right formation which makes the sentence correct.

Question 6:

The anodyne findings aren’t the reason most major parties are protesting. It is that the Working Group’s members had little say in shaping the recommendations that had made in their name”.
I-
recommendations that has been made in their name
II- recommendations that have been made in their name
III- recommendations that had been made in their name
IV- recommendations that have made in their name
V- no correction required

Solution :

II the sentence is in present form and in passive voice. Hence only option II is correct.

Question 7:

The year “which was ending saw the world coming to grips with” a new influenza pandemic after an interval of 40 years jumped to humans from pigs and possessed a mix of human, pig, and bird flu genes.
I- which has ended saw the world coming to grips with
II- that has ended saw the world coming to grips with
III- that had ended saw the world coming to grips with
IV- which had ended saw the world coming to grips with
V- No correction required

Solution:

II that is used when there is a restrictive clause so here that is a right choice and present perfect is used which indicates the event which ended in the recent past so option II is the right choice.

Question 8:

Autopsies carried out on some of those who succumbed in New York showed that the pandemic strain “were damaging cells all along the airway, including deep into the lungs.
I- was damaging cells all along the airway, including deep into the lungs.
II- was damaging cells all along the airway, included deep into the lungs.
III- Were damaging cells all along the airway, including deep into the lungs.
IV- damaged cells all along the airway, including deep down into the lungs.
V- No correction required

Solution:

I pandemic strain was continuously damaging cells so past continuous will be used. And pandemic strain is singular so was will be the correct choice. It makes option I correct choice.

Question 9:

Whenever reducing indoor pollution was the main objective of the earlier programme,” the latest initiative seeks to achieve the twin objectives of reducing indoor pollution and cutting the amount of soot emitted.
I-
While reducing indoor pollution was the main objective of the earlier programme,
II- Although reducing indoor pollution was the main objective of the earlier programme,
III- If reducing indoor pollution was the main objective of the earlier programme,
IV- By reducing indoor pollution was the main objective of the earlier programme,
V- No correction required

Solution:

III the sentence is conditional so only if can be used which makes option III correct.

Question 10:

The potential to “slow down the pace of global warming by reducing the soot emitted” from chulhas has caught the attention not only of India but of a few developed countries as well.
I-
slow down the pace of global warming on reducing the soot emitted
II- slowing down the pace of global warming by reducing the soot emitted
III- slowing down the pace of global warming from reducing the soot emitted
IV- slow down the pace of global warming on reducing the soot emitted
V- No correct required

Solution:

V with to+V1 is used generally so slow is correct and the preposition by tells how something can be done so how will the pace of global warming slow down? By reducing the soot emitted will be correct.

Question 11:

Like the subsequent Geneva ministerial with a broader participation, the Delhi talks were about processes rather than substantial issue.”
I- the Delhi talks was about processes rather than substantial issue.
II- the Delhi talks were about processes rather than substantial issue.
III- the Delhi talks was about process rather than substantial issues.
IV- the Delhi talks were about processes rather than substantial issues.
V- No correction required

Solution:

IV to maintain the sentence parallelism issues will be used as there is the use of processes. And with talks plural form of helping verb will be used i.e. were which makes IV the only right choice.
