4 weeks CAT exam Preparation Plan

Published on Saturday, October 12, 2013
First of all let me tell you that I have already completed my MBA from school of business studies PAU Ludhiana in 2013.
I appeared for CAT exam twice. In my first attempt I scored 89%ile and in my second attempt I scored 97%ile. I took admission in PAU because it was government funded and fee was about Rs 30000 per semester. Further I got two scholarship of Rs 12000 and Rs 25000 respectively. I prepared for four weeks and result was more than expected.

You can read my previous post on Best CAT books and CAT study plan
Now I will try to share how I prepared for each part of CAT test -

Grammar

I got my school education from a Punjabi medium government school. Learned a lot from there but my English was not so polished, still I make many grammar mistakes. A friend of mine who is teaching IELTS from past 3 years and scored 8 bands suggested me Essential Grammar in Use. This book is published by Cambridge University Press so I purchased it. It is a wonderful book and helped me to increase my score. Many people suggest Martin, but that was just waste of money and time. Go for Grammar in Use.

Reading comprehension

As I am a blogger I never faced any problem in reading comprehension part. I read many blogs and news websites online. I have installed many news apps on my mobile. In highly recommend you to start reading blogs and news online. You can make a blog yourself, it will improve your writing skills. Although writing is not a part of CAT exam but CAT is not an end of life.

Quantitative aptitude

This is tricky part of CAT exam. Many students waste their precious time on coaching institution's preparation material. Most of the students make mistake of choosing wrong preparation material. I also committed this mistake. Although Arun Sharma is a well known author but his books are below acceptable level of quality. Most of the questions are unsolved. I wasted about 15 days on his book.

Then I purchased Quantum Cat by Sarvesh Kumar and Quantitative ability by Nishit Sinha. Both of these books were above my expectations and helped me to achieve 99% ile in quantitative section. Most of the questions are solved and Nishit Sinha's book is really very tough, if you think you have completed your preparations, challenge this book.

Data interpretation

It is one of the most difficult yet interesting part of my CAT journey because there is no specific syllabus and it is impossible track performance in data interpretation. I purchased Arun sharma's book it is repetitive in nature, not much questions are available for practice. In data interpretation you need to practice several kinds of questions after getting expertise in a kind of question rush to another kind of questions.
I recommend you to buy Nishit Sinha's book as it contains several kinds of questions that too with various levels of difficulty.

Reasoning

Reasoning section is not covered in quantitative and verbal books so students don't prepare for this section. Although there are many questions in the exam. I purchased RS Aggarwal's Modern Verbal and Non verbal Reasoning (Review), it is an amazing book covering almost every question about verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
