  • Launched on January 22, 2015 by PM Narendra Modi

Advantages & Features

  • Involvement of banks and post offices ensures inclusions of all sections of the society.  
  • Attractive rate of interest, i.e. 9.20 per annum for the last financial year
  • Tax exemption under section 80C of the Income Tax Act
  • Account can be opened in any authorized bank or post office
  • Easy transfer of account from one bank to another 

Eligibility Criteria

  • The age of girl should be 10 years or less than 10 years.
  • Girl child born between 2nd February 2003 and 1st December 2015 is also eligible to get the account

Required Documents

  • Identity Proof of the Guardian/ Parents
  • Address Proof of the Guardian/Parents
  • Birth Certificate of Girl Child

Withdrawal of the Amount

  • 100% amount can be withdrawn after the girl is 21
  • 50% withdrawal is possible after the girl is 18. ( for illness, education or marriage)
  • No withdrawal is allowed if the girl is below 18.

Premature Closure of the Account

  • Account can be closed prematurely if the girl dies, but it will be done after the submission of her death certificate.
  • If government feels that the guardian/ parent is incapable of carrying forward the scheme, then the account can be closed.

Mature Closure of Account

  • Account can be closed when the girl is 21.
  • It can be continued after 21, but till the girl gets married
  • The account must be closed after girl's marriage.
  • If the girl gets married before 21, then the account must be closed. 

Deposit Amount

  • Rs. 1000 should be deposited as initial amount
  • At least Rs. 1000 should be deposited in the account annually failing in which will lead to the declaration of irregular account
  • Amount can be deposited only for 14 years after the opening of the account.

Number of Accounts

  • Only one account can be opened on a girl's name
  • Maximum 2 accounts can be opened for 2 girls of a couple/parents
  • If you have triplet of girl, then three accounts can be open for each girl child.
  • If twin girls are born after one girl, then two separate accounts can be opened for the twins and on account for the single girl.
