Published on Monday, March 19, 2018
Dear Students
We received many queries about the marks distribution in the English (Descriptive Section ) and the word limit of Essay Writing. Therefore, we did research and contacted our students who appeared for the exam last year. Here are the few things that you must know about the Descriptive English Section.

Marks Distribution

  • Essay Writing- 50 marks
  • Reading Comprehension- 30 Marks
  • Precis Writing- 20 Marks
There is a tendency of marks fluctuations in the exam. The marks may vary as follow
  • Essay Writing- 40 Marks
  • Reading Comprehension- 40 Marks
  • Precis Writing- 20 Marks

Essay Writing

For essay writing, the word limit will be between 200- 500 words. While writing essays, you must adhere to the word limit because many students score low marks in Descriptive English exam for not following the word limits. If the essay is for 200 words, try to condense your ideas. Use short sentences and learn one word-substitutes to master the art of short sentences.
  • Follow the 3 paragraph formula for 200 words essay that is - Introduction- Middle Paragraph- Conclusion.
  • If the word limit is 400- 500 words, follow the 5 paragraph formula - Introduction- Para 1- Para 2- Para 3- Conclusion.
Do not exceed the word limit in any situation.

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension passage will not be like you get in SBI or IBPS exams. The level of RC Passage is higher than the other competitive exams. If you want to prepare for RC then look for the previous year CAT exam papers because similar kind of RC will be given in the RBI Grade B. Start from solving easy or moderate level RC passages and then go for the difficult ones.

Precis Writing

While writing precis, word limit matters the most. You are supposed to summerise a paragraph in one-third words. If the paragraph is of 100 words then the precis should be of 33 words. Try to note down the important points and exclude the examples or stories given in the original paragraph. Try to solve at least 3 precis writing paragraphs in a week.
