Intuition


Definition: the ability to know something by using your feelings rather than considering the facts
Usage: Her intuition was telling her that something was wrong.



Scrutiny



Definition:
careful and thorough examination
Usage:  Because of their past crimes everything they do now will be subject to scrutiny

Suave


Definition: behaving in a relaxed, confident, and pleasant way in social situations
Usage: A suave and sophisticated businessman

Pessimism

Definition: a feeling that bad things will happen and that something will not be successful; the tendency to have this feeling
Usage:  Although the economy shows signs of improving a sense of pessimism remains.

Emancipate

Definition:  to free someone, especially from legal, political, or social restrictions
Usage:  President Abraham Lincoln is best known for his efforts to emancipate African Americans from slavery.

Heterodox

Definition: not following the usual or accepted beliefs and opinions Usage A Christian clergyman: with a very heterodox opinion on the divinity of Jesus

Exorcise

Definition: to make an evil spirit leave a place or someone's body by special prayers or magic
2) to remove something that is bad or painful from your mind
Usage: She had managed to exorcize these unhappy memories from her mind.


Vacuous

Definition :showing no sign of intelligence or sensitive feelings
Usage:  He had a vacuous expression on his face.


Necromancy

Definition:  the practice of claiming to communicate by magic with the dead, in order to learn about the future
2) the use of magic powers, especially evil ones
Usage:  In the conjuring of the souls of the dead necromancy seemed to offer human beings a means of exerting some control over an uncertain world


Fallow

Definition:  not used for growing crops, especially so that the quality of the land will improve.
2) when nothing is created or produced; not successful.
Usage : Contemporary dance is coming onto the arts scene again after a long fallow period.

Malediction

Definition:  a magical word or phrase uttered with the intention of bringing about evil; a curse.
Usage:  A malediction was pronounced against the town and ever since there has been no fresh water there.

Shun

Definition:  to avoid someone or something.
Usage:  After his divorce he found himself being shunned by many of his former friends.

Vagabond

Definition:  moving from place to place without a fixed home.
Usage:  He had lived as a vagabond begging for food.


Somnolent

Definition:  tired and ready to fall asleep.
2) causing a person to fall asleep : very boring.
Usage:  The sedative makes people very somnolen

Mandate

Definition:  an official order to do something.
2) the power to act that voters give to their elected leaders.
Usage:  It was a mandate that cars not speed on that curve in the road.
