  • School Education Quality Index came into existence as the NITI Aayog wanted to scrutinize the situation of the States and Union Territories when it comes to school education.

Major objectives behind School Education Quality Index Report

  • The ultimate aim of the School Education Quality Index is to lead to various reforms in the policies which are directly or indirectly linked with the quality of education in the school. It also aims to improve the overall learning experience by trying to facilitate better infrastructure and accessibility in the education sector.
  • According to the School Education Quality Index, education is a subject that is present in both the state list and concurrent list. Well, from this fact it is undoubtedly clear that the state as well as the center both need to work hand in hand if the education sector and the quality of education have to be improved. The School Education Quality Index comprises 30 important indicators that are used to gauge the quality of the education that is being delivered to the young minds in the schools.

Large States :-
1. Kerala
2. Rajasthan
3. Karnataka

Small States:-
1. Manipur
2. Tripura
3. Goa

Union Territories:-
1. Chandigarh
2. Dadra and Nagar Haveli
3. Delhi

States and Union Territories and their Performance

  • The NITI Aayog has divided the categories in large states, small states and Union Territories.
  • When it comes to the large states category, Kerala, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Assam are the five states which are the best in performance. The above mentioned states have achieved 60% as the performance score.
  • The score of Kerala is 76.63% ; the score of Rajasthan is 72.86%. The score of Karnataka is 69.57% while that of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are 67.88% and 61.95% respectively. The bottom five states include Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Jammu Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Manipur is the top performer in the list of small states. Scores of Manipur, Tripura and Goa are 64.5% and 58.37%, respectively.
  • Chandigarh is the top performer among the Union Territories with a score of 82.9%.
