Asterisk

Definition:   the symbol ( * ) placed next to a particular word or phrase to make people notice it or to show that more information is given in another place
Usage:  The student claimed there were so many allusions in the text that the asterisks made her "see stars".

Anesthetic

Definition:  something (as a drug) that relieves pain
Usage : the dentist waited until the anesthetic took effect.

Desolate

Definition:  empty and without people, making you feel sad or frightened
2) very lonely and unhappy
Usage:  A desolate house abandoned many years ago


Peroration

Definition: a flowery and highly rhetorical oration
Usage: Perorations were very much in practice in earlier times; today we prefer to be factual describing things as they are not as we imagine.

Gourmand

 
Definition: a person who is devoted to eating and drinking to excess
Usage: The man was a gourmand not getting satiated with the variety and quantity of food he took endlessly.



Mellifluous

Definition:  sounding sweet and smooth
Usage:  The mellifluous sound of the clarinet lulled angelina into a state of relaxation

Assorted

Definition:  of various different sorts
Usage:  A box of assorted chocolates

Peevish

Definition : easily annoyed by unimportant things
Usage:  Lack of sleep always made him peevish.

Dexterity

Definition:  skill in using your hands or your mind
Usage : The medical student marvelled at the surgeon's dexterity in the smart incisions and stitches he made on the patient's body

Tepid

Definition:  Moderately warm
Usage:  It is advisable to wash a wound with clean tepid water not cold or hot.

Brevity

Definition:  the quality of using few words when speaking or writing the fact of lasting a short time
Usage:  "the brevity of life"

Florid

Definition: having too much decoration or detail | red
Usage : " florid style of writing "



Analogy

Definition:  a comparison of one thing with another thing that has similar features; a feature that is similar
2) the process of comparing one thing with another thing that has similar features in order to explain it
Usage : The teacher drew an analogy between the human heart and a pump.


Unified

Definition:  formed or united into a whole
Usage:  Akbar not content with just invasion unified all his provinces to think in terms of belonging to one nation.

Deterrence

Definition: a thing that makes someone less likely to do something
2) the act of preventing a particular act or behavior from happening
Usage: Hopefully his punishment will act as a deterrent to others.
